Days to first harvest: 60-75 days from transplanting
Optimal temperature: 20°C-30°C – thrives well in Zambia’s warm climate
Lifespan: In warm conditions, plants can continue producing for several months with proper care and staking
Sunlight: Full sun, minimum 6-8 hours daily
Soil: Well-draining, fertile loamy soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 6.0-6.8
Spacing: 45-60 cm between plants, with rows 75-100 cm apart
Germination: 5-10 days. Start seeds in a nursery and transplant when seedlings reach 10-15 cm tall
Plants produce long clusters filled with small, juicy fruits. Harvest regularly once fruits turn fully red – frequent picking encourages continuous flowering and higher yields. Staking or trellising is recommended for healthier plants and cleaner fruits.
Yields will vary depending on soil quality, rainfall, irrigation, pest control, and farm management practices.
