Green Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris | Non-GMO)
A fast-growing, high-yielding vegetable crop prized for its tender, nutritious pods and reliable production. Green beans are easy to grow and highly marketable, making them an excellent choice for both home gardeners and commercial farmers.
Days to first harvest: 45-60 days from sowing
Optimal temperature: 18°C-28°C – well suited to Zambia’s warm growing conditions
Lifespan: Annual crop with a productive harvesting period of several weeks
Sunlight: Full sun, minimum 6-8 hours daily
Soil: Well-draining, fertile sandy-loam soil enriched with organic matter, pH 6.0-7.0
Spacing: 10-15 cm between plants, with rows 45-60 cm apart
Germination: 5-10 days. Sow seeds directly into moist soil and avoid disturbing roots after emergence
Plants produce abundant tender green pods that are best harvested when young, crisp, and before the seeds inside become fully developed. Regular picking every 2-3 days encourages continuous flowering and increased pod production throughout the season.
Yields will vary depending on soil quality, rainfall, irrigation, pest management, and farm management practices.
